Info For Group Members
Jordan Group Procedures
Gloveboxes
Ø See handout on glovebox
operation for correct operating procedure.
Ø Absolutely
no early transition metals (Group III – Group VI) are to be brought
into the late transition metal glovebox.
Ø Absolutely
no transition metals are to be brought into the main group glovebox.
Ø Use the signup sheet.
Ø Clean up after yourself (this
includes removing any spilled chemicals and the items used to clean
them, putting away all chemicals, and cleaning and putting away any
common items).
Chemicals
Ø All purchases (except those from
the Fisher Stockroom) must be approved by Rich or the lab supply
ordering supervisor (currently Buck).
Ø Check to see if we already have
a chemical before attempting to purchase it (check organics,
inorganics, the lecture bottle supply, individual lab and general group
refrigerators and freezers, vacuum transfer storage flasks, and with
other group members as appropriate).
Ø Do not take chemicals from
another person’s personal supply without prior permission from that
individual.
NMR Solvents
Ø Do not pipette from the group
supply of deuterated NMR solvents. These are for drying and
storage for group use by the assigned individual only. If you
need a personal supply of a particular solvent, purchase a bottle for
yourself or ask another group member if you can borrow some.
Ø If a particular NMR solvent in
the group supply that you need to use does not have someone assigned to
dry it, check the website or ask the person in charge of NMR solvents
(currently Buck) how to dry the solvent.
Ø Group NMR solvents are stored
under vacuum. Make sure your vacuum line pegs each time you use a
group NMR solvent.
Ø Do not recondense excess NMR
solvent back into the storage vessel.
Solvent Stills
Ø Do not collect solvent from the
solvent stills yourself. If you need a particular solvent that is
not available in the gloveboxes, provide an empty evacuated flask to
the individual assigned to dispense solvents from the solvent stills
(currently Buck and Stefan).
Instruments
Ø Do not use group instruments
(GPC, DSC, FTIR, UV-Vis, GC-MS) unless you have been trained to do so.
Ø Use the appropriate signup sheet
whenever you use an instrument.
Miscellaneous
Ø Do not borrow other people’s
glassware without asking them first.
